JEWEL: Jewish Trailblazers of the Trans-Mississippi

Wednesday, March 13, 2019 6 Adar II 5779

12:00 PM - 2:00 PMTINW Community Room

This JEWEL presentation by Professor Jack Judd explores Jews experience in the Western US. In the post Civil-War era, the open West beckoned many to venture into that vast territory. Among those were single Jewish men who either started out as peddlers, or sought new ways of earning a living. Some worked on the railroads as telegraphers, others into the mining camps where lead, silver and gold were discovered. Others tried to open shops. They invariably gave up many of the attributes of a Jewish lifestyle in far West.
