Summary |
This Yom Rishone all 15 students were present and we had a great class. We started by reading the story of the Maccabees and about the two "miracles" that the story is really about. There is a military victory by the Maccabees who are outnumbered but fighting for their Jewish identity and their right to be who they want to be. Then of course there is the miracle of the oil for one day that lasted for eight days. Each of the children received a poster to put up on the refrigerator for the next eight days, that explains the meaning of the letters on the dreidel, what the three Hanukkah blessings are,( we only say the last one, the Shechechiyanu the first night), and the rules of the dreidel game. We played a special version of Hanukkah Bingo where the children created there own boards out of known letters, now including: Nun, Gimel, Hey, and Peh, and Hanukkah facts, so we have yet to play the dreidel game. That will be part of the festivities next week.
Hebrew through movement was the usual blast of Hebrew language with Tzufganiot and Levivot generously provided by Moreh Ariela. Ask your child what those foods are, and which they preferred!!
We ended with a Hannukiah Tutorial by Rabbi Jaech, Rabbi Pein and the fifth graders which was hilarious and will help us all remember to set the candles in the Hanukkiah from right to left but to light them the opposite way, always lighting the newest candle first.
Hannukah Sameach! Happy Hannukah!
See you next week for the seventh day of our Kislev holiday!!
