Shalom Kitah Dalet Parents,
In our 13th Ivrit session our Daletniks found their very own copies of the Mitkadem text to take home and keep. I recommended that they use it to brush up on letters and vowels that they are likely to forget in the coming semester. The prayers we will study will not have every letter and vowel, so review will be very helpful. I also demonstrated an alternative and, perhaps, more fun way of reviewing: the Behrman House “Click-and-read-free” Hebrew decoding tool, at the following URL:
www.behrmanhouse.com/click-and-read-free
They seemed to like this, as many were raising their hands to take a turn reading.
The class then got started on the study of our first prayer text for the year: Mi Khamokha. I wish I could report to you that they delved into this eagerly and with confidence. Rather, they seemed a bit intimidated and reticent regarding the reading. Hopefully, they will get over this when we return. Due to the shortness of time (the last 45 minutes of the morning were spent in Maccabiah games), we did not get to work with the learning stations. We’ll have plenty of time for those in future sessions. I did not give an assignment over the break.
While the games were going on, two of our parents were busily organizing and preparing the food drive donations for weighing and loading. Special thanks go to Jessica Roppa and Meredith Bruckman for their great help! We collected 246 lbs. of food—a great accomplishment! It was delivered to the Croton Caring Committee after class. Thank you to all families who donated, to Ms. Deckert, who explained the importance of the drive to our students and to Rabbi Pein and Roberta Robinson for supporting and promoting it in the CJL. Thanks also go to the Croton Shop Rite for donating 12 reusable grocery bags to help organize and transport the food. The CCC was very grateful for the donation and will be sending us a thank you.
I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a happy secular New Year and, to those parents who are Christian, a Merry Christmas! I’m looking forward to seeing your children again on January 7.
L’shalom,
Lane Chazdon
