Dear Kitah Dalet families,
*We started our new unit in the Book of Exodus with a fun 'Let's find out what we have in common' activity. Teams built pyramids with each 'brick' representing one thing the pairs had in common. By the end of the activity there were lots of smiles and tall towers representing our friendships! (See photos attached!)
*A midrash tells us that we should each consider that we were present at Mount Sinai when Moses presented the Aseret Hadibrot/ the Ten Commandments to the Israelites. Everyone illustrated what that might look like as we imagined that moment. We will continue working in our Ten Commandments packet next week as we explore the Commandments further. We are learning a song to help us remember the names of the 5 Books of the Torah. Do not be surprised if you start to hear some lively snapping, clapping and stamping if you pass our classroom!
*I've attached a special thank you card from the medical unit of Jewish soldiers who received the beautiful dalet Hanukkah cards!
*Please note that this weekly email will now be emailed directly home as well as being posted on the TINW.ORG website for your convenience.
*We sent home a note about the upcoming MITZVAH DAY on Sunday 1/20/19. Please review the note and contact the CJL office with your info. Parents are encouraged to attend for the 9:30-11:30 day with a light community lunch . Note the special timing for that day.
l'shalom,
Betsy Deckert

Shalom Kitah Dalet Parents,
In response to parent requests, teachers have been asked to resume sending the update to the parents. Please send me reply if you’d rather opt out of this delivery; I’ll take your name off the mail group. For the sake of completeness, I’m going to attach the assignments to the same message.
I hope you had an enjoyable secular New Year! Now we are back in CJL and, in our 14th Ivrit session delved into Mi Khamokha, the prayer composed and sung after the Israelites escaped from Egypt to safety by crossing the Sea of Reeds. The session began with as close to live footage of this drama as possible: a film clip of the parting of the sea from “The Ten Commandments”
(yes, the one with Charlton Heston as Moses). We discussed their reactions. Most students agreed that this was truly a miraculous event while recognizing that we don’t know what really happened. We then got directly involved with the text by practicing decoding and translating it at the learning stations. We spent some time together in front of the pocket chart parsing the syllable, reviewing a few rusty letters and vowels along the way. I explained that Mi Khamokha is one of the three prayers (along with Bar’khu and Sh’ma) that our class will be leading from the bimah at our class service, Friday, April 5. The session ended with receiving the assignment and going through it for directions. Our assignments from now on will relate to the prayers we’re learning. Please keep encouraging your child to practice the reading of the text and doing the written exercises.
At the end of the day I shared with our class the wonderful thank you letter we received from the Croton Caring Committee for our food drive donation. I’m also attaching that, as well as a picture of the CCC members receiving the donation. They also sent the students lollipops, which most accepted!
L’shalom,
Lane Chazdon
